Each performance will feature six 10-Minute Plays and six 1-Minute plays (we are calling them “Klex Haikus”). All 12 playwrights have used the same painting, Norman Zammitt’s “The Hard White Edge” to inspire their pieces. Each of the 10-Minute Plays was mentored by a DC-based small theatre and will reflect that company’s unique style.
In addition to Rorschach Theatre, the mentor partner companies include Hissing Black Cat Theater, Pinky Swear Productions, Pointless Theatre, Theater Alliance and Young Playwrights Theater.
Themes and topics in the six 10-Minute plays include: yoga, fire, politics, inspiration, mythology, afterlife, artistry, racism, alcoholism, violence, birds, refugees, war and Amelia Earhart.
Themes and topics in the six 1-minute plays aren’t available yet as they play will be created on Saturday afternoon just hours before they’re performed.
Yes.
As with a lot of the work Rorschach chooses, these pieces explore a range of human experiences. The plays have some dark themes, some truly hilarious moments, great music and a couple of things strange enough to have you contemplating them on the way home. Also, frequent 9:30 club VJ Kylos Brannon will be creating live video experiences between each play.
“Appropriate” is of course a relative word, but here are a few things to know:
Violence: There’s some staged violence and discussions of suicide, alcoholism and war.
Language: a few instances curse words throughout the pieces.
Explicit Sexual Content: None…(maybe next time.) 🙂
Note the “themes” list above in the “What Happens?” section for more details
About 75 minutes. No intermission.
#klex18 kicked off this morning at National Gallery of Art. 30+ artists have 8 days to create six short plays inspired by Norman Zammitt’s “The Hard White Edge”. Each play will focus on the aesthetic of one of our partner companies: Pointless Theatre Co., Theater Alliance, HBC Theater and The Den, Young Playwrights' Theater and Pinky Swear Productions. Don’t. Miss. This.
