Distance Frequencies: FAQ

A lost letter reveals a hidden alliance. A familiar fragrance revives ancient memories. What unseen history does each corner of a city hold? DISTANCE FREQUENCIES harnesses the power of the built and the natural world to create a visceral piece of immersive storytelling. Each month participants receive a map, a box of artifacts, and instructions to travel to a new curated location in the DC area. The ongoing story culminates in a full production of an outdoor site-specific show in the summer of 2021.

DISTANCE FREQUENCIES: FAQ

I prefer not to leave my home at this time. Can I still participate?

Yes! Each chapter will provide alternative instructions for experiencing the contents in your own home. The final performance in July 2021 will be an outdoor in person event with social distancing observed.  A recorded version of the performance will be available in August 2021.

Do I need to purchase a separate box for each member of my household?

It really depends on how you want to engage with the experience. Items in the box may be best used by one person at a time, so you may have to take turns with them, or in some cases there may be consumables. Each DISTANCE FREQUENCIES season purchase includes one seat for the performance in summer of 2021. If you choose a single box for a multi-user household, you’ll need to purchase additional seats for the final performances.  TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW.

When will the chapters be sent? What’s my deadline to sign up?

In most cases new orders are mailed weekly. You can order at anytime before, during, or after the July performance. If you’d like to experience the chapters prior to the July performance, we recommend ordering by June 15th.

Is this okay for kids?

In most cases yes. It generally falls in the PG-13 range.

How far will I have to travel to reach each month’s location?

Most locations are within DC.

Do I need a car to participate in this?

All seven locations, as well as the final performance location, have some degree of public transportation accessibility. (Though we understand not everyone may wish to use public transportation at this time.) If you are unable or prefer not to travel to any chapter destination, we provide alternative at-home instructions.

When are these events happening?

Whenever you want! Certain locations have specific open/closed hours to be aware of, but generally you can launch your own experience whenever it’s convenient for you.

How are you ensuring the safety of participants?

We have chosen locations that tend to be less trafficked. We also ask that participants wear masks and remain distanced from anyone else they encounter on their adventure. Generally experiences will be primarily outdoors. We also look to participants to exercise their own excellent judgement–look both ways when crossing streets, don’t hassle pigeons, wear your seatbelt and make good choices.

How long does each experience take?

While your travel time will vary based on your starting location and mode of transportation, we anticipate each experience being 15-40 minutes of content. Additionally, each expedition will come with further suggestions of optional ways to enhance your trip.

Do I have to experience the first seven chapters to see the live show?

Nope! Anyone should be able to enjoy the DISTANCE FREQUENCIES: TRANSMISSION performance.  However, you’ll enjoy it even more if you’ve experienced  Chapters 1-7.

Can I see the show and purchase the first seven chapters afterward?

Absolutely.  Click here and choose the option
Adult Participant: Chapters 1-7 ONLY”

What’s the best way to experience all seven chapters before the July performance?

These are our top three suggestions for diving into DISTANCE FREQUENCIES right now.

THE ONE-AT-A-TIMER

Fit in your outings one by one, evenings, weekends or lunch breaks any day.  Most locations can be visited at any time.  Be sure to read the instructions for each chapter in advance to plan your trip.  They’ll offer restaurant suggestions and other nearby activities to expand your experiences.

Set aside any two days and experience all seven chapters back to back.  We recommend splitting it up this way:

Chapter 1: Upper Northwest (free parking lot available)
Chapter 2: Southwest Waterfront (primarily street parking or paid lots)
Chapter 3: Mid-City (street parking)

LUNCH
[Pro Tip: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 locations are both good lunch areas]

Chapter 4: Near Georgetown (street parking)
Chapter 5: Near U Street (street parking)
[Pro Tip: Chapter 5 ends with a view that’s beautiful at dusk]

DINNER & DRINKS

DAY 2
Chapter 6: Northeast DC (free parking lot available)

LUNCH
[Pro Tip: pack a lunch to enjoy at the Chapter 6 destination.  It’s lovely there.]

Chapter 7: Woodley Park

DINNER
[Pro Tip: lots of great dinner and drinks options nearby Chapter 7]

THE HOMEBASE

While we recommend going to location in person if it’s feasible, experiencing each Chapter at home is by far the quickest way to catch up.  Each Chapter comes with a walking tour video so that you experience the site from home.  Chapter lengths vary but generally take 20-40 minutes to experience.  Find a cozy spot at home and dive in!
